It all depends on the context and the purpose, as evidenced by the variety of answers.
If it was a purely attempt at factual description, then you couldn't do it.
If it was some attempt to convey to them what colours MEAN to you, then you could do the whole red = danger, red = passion thing.
If it was an attempt to explain the role of colour in our lives, you could use an analogy, and compare it to sounds... you could perhaps say red is a colour, which is a visual characsteristic things have, just as sounds have acoustic characteristics, such as volume, and pitch.
