i was asked this in class the other day..... i want to know what everyone else would say

I would not try to describe a color to someone blind...there is no point.

Red - - - it's a warm color that's totally ALIVE. When I eat a chocolate covered cherry and close my eyes in ecstasy, I think of the color red.

99 per cent have some sight. So you could say to someone who is visually impaired , red is like a juicy apple, just off the tree. Red is the colour of your heart inside your body.
Red is the colour of cherries, of old fire engines. Red is the colour of your blood. Red is the colour of rubies.

In other words draw a word picture so the legally blind person or blind person can make up the picture in his/her head.

I'm really tiring of these kind of ignorant questions about blind people here. If you're a teacher and you're coming up with stupid questions like this go to your Federation of the Blind or Canadian National Institute of the blind , bring a blind person into the classroom and ask him or her.

It all depends on the context and the purpose, as evidenced by the variety of answers.

If it was a purely attempt at factual description, then you couldn't do it.

If it was some attempt to convey to them what colours MEAN to you, then you could do the whole red = danger, red = passion thing.

If it was an attempt to explain the role of colour in our lives, you could use an analogy, and compare it to sounds... you could perhaps say red is a colour, which is a visual characsteristic things have, just as sounds have acoustic characteristics, such as volume, and pitch.

You cannot describe a color to someone that is not able to see.
You can tell what objects are of that color,what they are used for,what they taste or feel,but the blind person is the only one that could imagine what a color looks like and nobody could know what color a blind person associate with red.
