my father in law had a cataract removed Tuesday. we are letting him stay with us till we feel he can put his own eye drops in. he does not live alone, he lives with his brother but he does not think his brother will help him. we sort of told him we were going to take him home Sunday and now he is talking about he just about needs to be led around by the hand and how he so helpless. i think he is starting to like the attention and living here. can anyone who has had a cataract removed or been with someone who has tell me how long it takes to be able to take care of yourself?

It depends on how competent the person is, and how good the surgeon. My mother had it done at 83 years of age, and didn't require any extra care. (She was used to putting in eye drops, but how big a deal is that?. so what if you waste a drop or two?). She was living in a retirement community, and I saw one of the other residents, walking around, and He said he had had it done. I said When? He said this morning. I said "wow". He said it was nothing--The doctor said avoid heavy lifting for two days, period.
