The last information I had on this (May 2007) was that the Edinburgh clinic that had run a trial on the
NAC (N-Acetyl-Carnosine) Eye Drops and Lutein supplement
had discontinued it because it was at best 20% effective.
(and with no assurance that the cataract would not re-occur some time after the eight week treatment had ended...)
It also appears that they have been banned by the FDA in the United states.
This despite a surge of newpaper and TV coverage claiming much more drastic results, never mind the internet marketing sites: See below.
There may come drops that reliably make cataract surgery unnecessary. But not it appears just yet, for most people.
