how do you get conjunctivitis ?

i went to bed last night with a sore right eye. I have extreemly long eyelashes and some times they become ingrowen. i Naturally assumed that was what the pain was. But when i woke this moring, My eye was stuck shut, with gunk. ive put some eye treatment in them, and whiped the gunk away, but i still cant keep it open. Is it conjunctivitis? how would i have caught it???
