Can anyone tell me what constitutes a severe astigmatism perscription? (I know how to read the cylinder and the axis on the perscription, but I don't know what numbers indicate a mild, moderate, and severe astigmatisms). Does just the cylinder number show severity, or does the Axis number also have an effect?

My latest perscription (from an opthamologist) is as follows:
OD: +1.00 sphere, +1.00 cylinder, 120 axis.
OS: -3.25 sphere, +.50 cylinder, 90 axis
Do I have mild, moderate, or severe astigmatisms in each of my eyes?

Also, I cannot really see clearly out of my right eye at distances, even though I know I am farsighted. I figure it is my astigmatism that is causing most of the problem. Is it particularly difficult to get a perscription that can correct astigmatisms so that I can somehow get closer to 20/20? I still feel like my glasses don't help me much with that eye--images aren't really sharp.

Also, what numbers indicate mild/moderate/severe farsightedness?
I will add that I had amblyopia in the right eye as a child, but it was corrected. I don't see halos or anything. Also, I still use that eye to see distances when I am not wearing my glasses--it works somewhat for around the house things. Could this amblyopia be having an affect on why my glasses perscription doesn't really help my right eye that much?

ok...your cylinders indicate astigmatism...+1 and +.50 are mild and very borderline moderate in your right eye. The axis number just tell a location of your astigmatism...like a compass...it will range from 0-180.

Moderate astigmatism is approximately +1 to +4, and severe astigmatism is over +4.

Your right eye is farsighted at +1...this is pretty mild my hubby was +6.5

your left eye is nearsighted at -3.25...this is in about the moderate category...usually anything below -3 is considered mild, -3 to -6 moderate, -6 and over is high. You're borderline in the mild to moderate range. I was -8.25 and -7.75

Yes, astigmatism prescriptions are harder to attain than just myopia or hyperopia...sometimes it's something you need to work closely with your optometrist and optical lab to get it just right. My husband always had a hard time getting his astigmatism corrected.

I hope our optometrists can help with some input here...Princeidoc can probably tell you even more than I can about how astigmatism correction can be achieved...I hope he sees your question.
