Default Why do short sighted people see things clearly close up and blurry far away?

And long-sighted people are the opposite. I get that normally short-sighted people (me) have a long-shaped eye and the light focuses before the retina and crosses over and when it reaches the eye it isn't focused any more so the image is bruured, but why do close things seem clearer???

Ok. Let me try, Someone like you and me with a high minuse RX see things really close really good. It is like having a big magnifying glass in your eye. You and I have too much plus power in our eye so we see sucky far away and great up close. It is like a normal eye putting a set of magnifying glasses on. So, me at a -6.00 for my glasses is like my having a +6.00 magnifyer naturally so I need the -6.00 to make me see normal. Did I just make it worse> I bet I did! HUMPH! O^O

You basically answered most of your own question. Yes, those of us who are nearsighted have an eye that is longer than "normal."

Everything isn't made blurry, it is just shifted in. You have a certain focal range, and if the eye is longer or shorter than normal, the location of this range is shifted. A near-sighted person (without presbyopia and without moderate to severe astigmatism) should be able to see things closer than those who don't have any refractive error. Likewise, though a far-sighted person may not be able to see close things without glasses, they can probably see further out than most people.

this is hard to explain and hard to wrap one's brain around. but in very basic terms a "shortsighted" or "nearsighted" person has an eye thats too long, or a cornea thats too curved (steep), or both. that makes the focal point be close up. its like "focusing" your camera. your eye has chosen to "focus" up close, not far away. consequently, you're blurry far away.

that probably didnt help much lol
