Default Strabismus (lazy eye) patching?

My son is 20 months old. His right eye wanders out to the side escpecially when he's tired. I have an appointment with a children's eye specialist 2 months from now. The waiting list is long and I'm anxious to help my son. I want to make sure the vision in the wandering eye doesn't deteriorate any more over the next 60 days.
For anyone who has gone through this with their own child, how many hours a day did your child wear a patch on the "good" eye?
Thanks, Sunshine. I had been wondering where to buy those patches and if I needed a prescription. I have a small square of receiving blanket fabric taped over his eye for now. I will look for the patches at Walmart. Thanks a bunch!

I would not start patching the child's eye without seeing the ophthalmologist first. The biggest concern is if the eye turn is constant, with the eye turn only happening occasionally when he is tired, I would hold off on the patching until you see the specialist and see what he/she recommends. Seeing the specialist is the most important thing right now. I'm glad you are going ahead and getting him seen. Too many parents wait too long and then there isn't much that can be done to help their child.
