How to keep your eyes healthy when you have contacts??

I have had contacts for about 2 and a half years now. Is it ok to wear contacts for more than 12 hours in a day?? Sometimes, my eyes feel really sore and they sting...is it coz of the contacts? Please give me tips on how to keep my eyes healthy and how to cope with contacts.
